What is DVR?

DVR (Digital Video Recorder) is similar to a VCR except instead of recording to the video and audio data to a tape, it records it to a hard drive which is built into a DVR. The hard drives can store from days to months of video.

Unlike a VCR the DVR has many advanced features and can be viewed remotely across the internet from your PC.

A DVR comes in two main profiles. One is a PC and operates like a PC and others being a Non-PC-Based or Embedded DVR, as it is known. Both offer very similar functions.

The reality is, a true DVR meant for security is a sophisticated system composed of hardware components, software programs and sub-assemblies with built-in checks and balances. It all must work in unison to create a robust and reliable piece of equipment, designed for mission critical applications. This is not to be confused with the TiVo or other set top cable boxes that are also known as ??DVRs.??They are in no way related. Creating a DVR solution requires a dedicated team of software and hardware engineers, programmers and system designers, plus support personnel. Ostensibly, this is not a product you will see truly manufactured by Joes hardware store. Remember, we are talking about security where there is no margin for error. These applications take years to develop and de-bug.
